Plastic Packaging Better for Environment than Alternatives Made with Other Materials

A recent life cycle assessment analyzed the energy and climate benefits of alternative plastic materials in contrast to plastic material. The categories included caps and closures, beverage containers, other rigid containers carrier bags, stretch/shrink wrap, and other flexible packaging materials. Carol Hochu, President and CEO of the Canadian Plastic Industry Association noted, “Plastic packaging enables the safe and efficient delivery of various products which form part of our daily lives, everything from food to essential health and safety aids. However, many are unaware that plastics carry out these functions while at the same time conserving energy and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.”

In Canada, the LCA found that replacing all plastic packaging the non-plastic packaging would:

  1. Require nearly 4.4 times as much packaging material by weight. Increasing by nearly 5.5 million tons.
  2. This would also increase energy use by 2.0 times. This was calculated as being equivalent to the amount of oil transported by 18 supertankers
  3. This would result in 2.3 times more global warming potential. This was equated to adding 3.3 million more cars to the road.

Engineering in plastic packaging enables innovation and performance – the ability to extend the shelf life of foods and medicines. Plastic packaging viewed from the entire life cycle have more benefits than the snapshot that has been taken in years.

The afterlife of plastic is further contributing to sustainability in many ways. The ability to recycle, reuse and repurpose for energy value and converted to liquid oil, electricity and into other fuels.

There have been great strides made in the reusability and repurposing of plastic containers. These valuable resources are used to make fleece jackets, new plastic bottles, pipes, pallets, creates and buckets, decking and other lawn and garden products. The majority of product stemming from recycled plastic bottles, non-bottle rigid plastics such as deli and dairy containers, bakery, vegetable, fruit containers, and plastic film, bags and outer wrap.

Plastic enhances our lifestyles, our economy, and the environment.

CDF’s Flexible Packaging Division Passes Food Safety Audit

CDF Corporation, a leading manufacturer of drum, pail, intermediate bulk container and bag in box liners and flexible packaging, has passed a food safety audit for one of North America’s largest consumer packaged food and beverage companies.

An auditor from Quality Assured Solutions was contracted to perform a food safety audit on CDF’s Flexible Packaging division. The food safety audit evaluates many aspects of compliance with respect to food safety, sanitary working conditions, employee training and the proper handling of food products and packaging. CDF’s Flexible Packaging division passed the food safety audit with a score of 88.1 out of 100. With this score, CDF has been approved to supply IBC liners to this highly regarded global food processor.

During the 16 hour audit the Flexible Packaging division showed that many food safety items were already in place, there is an active GMP program in place and there is a working copy of a HACCP plan. The audit was based on the customer’s supplier expectation manual. The manual is the standard and the supplier is assessed against the standard.

“We have been working on many of the GSFI requirements as we get closer to our ultimate goal of SQF Level 2 Certification in 2016. It was reassuring to have a well-respected third party auditor verify we are on the right track,” said Tom McCarthy, Flexible Packaging General Manager.

The auditing company, Quality Assured Solutions, offers world class consulting to the food, beverage and confectionary industries on a domestic and international scope.food

Products for Intermediate Bulk Containers – Air-Assist Liner

Air-Assist Liner Set-Up & Dispense

Air-Assist liners are specially designed for convenient dispense and improved evacuation of high viscosity products. The Air-Assist liner features a Form-fit liner with an attached air bladder. As the air bladder is inflated, it pushes against the Form-fit liner, forcing the viscous product out of the bottom dispense fitment, resulting in less residual product left in the liner. In addition, the Air-Assist liner is hands-free; after attaching the air supply system, the operator can walk away during dispense.

Flexible Packaging Options

The flexible packaging industry has recently encapsulated two of the largest concerns for consumers, to ensure the secure and safe environment and satisfying the need for a greener footprint. In the adhesive and sealant world, transporting product in drums and pail is a necessity although these containers carry many benefits, sustainability efforts remain on the forefront of consumers’ minds. Flexible packaging options add the sustainability wanted while maintaining the value needed in order to keep this high demand industry moving.

One of the challenges faced by adhesive and sealant manufacturers and transporters is the contamination issues that exist when using the steel drum and pail, such contamination makes it difficult to reuse, recondition, or even recycle. The flexible packaging option keeps the drums/pails clean, this eliminates cleaning and refurbishing costs as well as time constraints, the drum/pail is ready for immediate reuse. Flexible packaging option brings ensures product integrity, it preserves the product purity while presenting stronger sustainability advantages.

The flexible packaging materials weigh significantly less than other packaging formats, this reduces costs in resources for transportation, as well as warehouse space being maximized this formulates into less carbon dioxide emissions.

Flexible packaging offers great value and sustainability benefits to consumers, retailers, and manufacturers by reducing waste, energy used, and greenhouse gas emissions. It presents excellent sustainable choice that satisfies the adhesive and sealant industry while providing a greener footprint.

CDF introduces new fitment for plastic totes

The unique 3” discharge assembly was designed for fast dispense from plastic knock down intermediate bulk containers. The 3 inch discharge assembly consists of a 3 inch gland with membrane, a plug, a membrane cutter and a fitment adaptor. The clips on the discharge assembly allow the fitment to be attached directly onto the bin resulting in a secure and sturdy dispense. Standard 3 inch fitments have no way of attaching onto a bin, resulting in poor dispense fitment location which causes difficulty during product dispense.

“This 3 inch discharge assembly offers a superior solution for dispensing viscous liquids in collapsible totes,” stated CDF IBC Accounts National Sales Manager Phil Lanier.

CDF eco-smart packaging solutions

Since 1971, CDF has been an industry leader in sustainable packaging. Decades ago, we launched the 55 gallon drum liner. For the first time, this 55 gallon steel drum liner allowed drums to be reused, eliminating cleaning costs and landfill waste.

In the 1980’s CDF introduced round bottom technology to manufacture economical, lighter weight liners and barrier films for oxygen, moisture and hot filling applications. These innovations permitted the outer rigid container to be easily reused or recycled.

CDF’s intermediate bulk container liners were introduced in the 1990’s to reduce the need for expensive rigid packaging. With the use of our IBC liners, CDF’s customers are able to reduce transportation costs of rigid containers. The patented design maximized product efficiency, allowing the customer to get the most product possible out of the container.

CDF continues to be a pioneer in introducing product breakthroughs that result in environmental benefits and reduce customer cost.

The Cheertainer bag in box is an environmentally-friendly, alternative to traditional packaging. Its form-fit, square design provides an eco-smart bag in box option; its reduced plastic consumption minimizes packaging requirements, while maximizing transportation and storage efficiency.

The Smart Pail is a semi-rigid, flexible vacuum-formed plastic liner with a hermetically sealed plastic lid and/or snap-on plastic cover, corrugated box and corrugated lid. Due to its design, the Smart Pail reduces plastic consumption by 76% and is able to achieve one extra skidded layer during transport than standard rigid pails, equating to 33% more transportation and warehousing efficiency.
